Midnights (The Review)

From bopping to the jams of “Shake It Off”, to crying over your love life to “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version)”, almost everyone has loved a Taylor Swift song. On October 20, 2022, Taylor Swift Released a new album, Midnights, with the title referring to the music she’s written in the middle of the night.  This album showcases 13 songs, one of which, “Snow on the Beach,”features artist Lana Del Ray. The vibes of this album varies from upbeat tunes to melancholy melodies, having themes of finding self identity.

Like most of Taylor’s songs, she incorporates witty wordplay into her lyrics. One of the most popular songs, “Anti-Hero,” dives into the topic of self-worth. One of the most notable lyrics from that song is, “Did you hear my covert narcissism I disguise as altruism, like some kind of congressman?” In this line, Taylor expresses how she feels the media magnifies and manufactures flaws in celebrities by speaking from the perspective of a tabloid. In the “Anti-Hero music video, she showcases ways in which she expressed her eating disorder. In another song, “Bejeweled”, she expressed her views of assessing her dignity despite her romantic past, with a fan theory of the song referencing her old song, “Mirrorball”.

It wouldn’t be a Taylor album if there wasn’t a reference to her romantic endeavors. For instance, one of her songs, “Sweet Nothing,” references her current relationship with Joe Alwyn. This romantic, lullaby-like song goes into detail about the highs and lows of being with him.

In addition to the 13 songs listed in the album at 3am she released 7 bonus tracks, Midnights (3am edition). These songs also relate to the themes of the entire album. On twitter, she announced, “I think of Midnights as a complete concept album, with those 13 songs forming a full picture of the intensities of that mystifying, mad hour. However! There were other songs we wrote on our journey to find that magic 13.”

As a huge Swiftie, I’ll always love and praise whatever songs she releases (besides “ME!”). Personally, I believe this album had incredible lyrics and catchy tunes that stay in my head all the time. I love how personable and soft this album is compared to other songs on her discography. Personally I like how it doesn’t just focus on her love life or experiences, but it focuses on her internal struggles as well.
