With spring waiting just around the corner, MKHS Theatre Company announced their musical. Presenting: Addams Family The Musical. Select members of the Aztec writing and editing team were able to view the production early, and throughout rehersals.

The Addams’ Family puts family first and family last, until their eldest child, and only daughter, Wednesday Addams (Kaitlyn Cao) brings home a boy. Lucas Beineke (Timothy Chuc) is head over heels for Wednesday, but when he brings his parents, Malcolm Beineke (Ronan Rock) and Alice Beineke (Reyna Padillo), to meet her family, the stability of their relationship is called into play. Gomez Addams (Anthony Porras), the patriarch of the family, will do anything for his daughter, but when his wife, Morticia Addams (Trinity Chang), disapproves of the union, he must navigate the trap of appeasing his daughter, while keeping his marriage alive. The entire show is narrorated by Fester Addams (Sean Umeda) as he tries to set the young lovers up, but will love prevail?

My thoughts:
I. Love. This. Cast. I have had the pleasure of seeing another production of this musical, but their cast could never compare to MKHS Theatre Company’s.

Now listen, I am officially titling myself #1 Beineke stan. Okay because Reyna Padillo’s heart stabbing vocals in her solo, “Waiting,” along with her insanely fun personality, makes Alice Beineke one of my favourite characters in the show. How did she hit those notes??? I literally thought she died at the end of “Full Disclosure.” Reyna stan!!!

It also shouldn’t go without mention that Anthony Porras and Trinity Chang have an amazing chemistry on stage, playing the couple of Gomez and Morticia very well. You can tell these are two very experienced actors. This will be their second time playing opposite one another for an MKHS production, the first being earlier this year in “Almost, Maine.” Trinity also gets to solo a song, “Just Around the Corner,” where she shows off her insane vocals, and makes it clear why she is the only true Morticia.

I can’t talk about anything else but Sean Umeda’s performance of Fester. Sean brought his A-game to the stage. Every time he came on, the energy of the audience changed. I even remember the people in front of me only recording clips of Sean. He got the oohs and aahs from them. I love Sean.

Roselyn Chin’s comical portrayal of Pugsley will leave audiences on the floor laughing. I really love how she ended the song, “What If,” on a long sustained note. It was really amazing.

Can we talk about Mal Beineke for a second?! Yas King!! Rip that shirt off!!!! Ronan Rock absolutely killed it as the straight conservative Ohioan, and father of the male love interest. To round out their arc, Alice and Mal sing a duet together called, “In the Arms,” and hearing Reyna and Ronan sing together might have been the best thing to ever grace this auditorium. I had the privilege of acting with Ronan during, “Almost, Maine,” and if you couldn’t tell already, I adore Ronan as an actor; his delivery is second to none.

Of course I can’t forget to mention the awesome power couple in Addams Family. Kaitlyn and Timothy play opposite each other as Wednesday Addams and Lucas Beineke. Kaitlyn’s Wednesday gave me Jenna Ortega vibes, which is absolutely a great thing. Timothy played off of Kaitlyn very well, with so many great and quotable one-liners.

This cast put on a great show, but I can’t go without mentioning the tech theatre crew. There were no flaws in those scene transitions!

Overall, this show was amazing, and I highly recommend for you to go see it. Thank you to Ms. Phillips, and the MKHS Theatre Company, for allowing me to view the dress rehersal.
