MKHS proudly presents the 2024 Prom Night, a night that will be filled with glamour and excitement. With many expectations, Junior’s class council is organizing this year’s long-awaited prom that will take place on Saturday, May 4. On the night of March 10, it was revealed that this year’s event will be hosted at The Los Angeles Zoo with the theme of “A Night In New Orleans.”
Prior to the theme and location’s announcement, many students’ believed Prom 2024 would take place at Griffith Observatory and would have a theme relating to Star Wars. “I think the prom’s theme for this year will be Star Wars. Mainly because some of the hints have relations to Star Wars,” Uyen Sun said, a Junior. Hints three, six, and seven were associated with the film as they indicated the date of the prom, May 4, Star Wars Day (May the fourth be with you). The council decided to use space related hints to mislead everyone and it successfully worked. The first clue to the location is a picture of a dance scene from the movie “La La Land.” The scene was in fact filmed at the Griffith Observatory, which led students to believe it would be the location for the 2024 prom.
The actual theme can be connected to hints four and nine. Hint four includes a picture of the University of Southern Alhambra’s football field. Located in Mobile, Alhambra, it is famous for being the founding city of Mardi Gras which is well known in New Orleans. Mardi Gras has become a tradition in New Orleans, where people celebrate Fat Tuesday and colors such as purple, green, and gold are abundant. Hint nine refers to the music that is usually played at Mardi Gras celebrations, mainly rhythm-and-blues and jazz.
Unfortunately, many juniors and seniors were disappointed with the results. Marco Deng, a senior, said, “I think [the theme] made sense but it doesn’t really match the location set for this theme.” Another senior, Courtney Vu, said, “… last year’s prom seems to be better since the theme and location both made sense.” Despite the overall negative response, Chloe Wu, a junior at MKHS shared, “I think that [The Los Angeles Zoo] is an unusual place to hold a prom, but would be unique and fun… I am not fully sure what [A Night In New Orleans] is, but it is unexpected.”
In preparation for the prom, the Junior class council collaborated with an event planning company. The company provided a catalog of potential venues taking into consideration factors such as distance, budget, and repetition. It was finalized that the Los Angeles Zoo would be the location for this year’s prom. In describing the venue, Madison Kang, the Junior class publicist, stated, “We settled on the L.A. Zoo because we wanted an open, outdoor floor plan and had seen photos of the space at night and really liked it.” It was also said that the venue holds plenty of greenery that really embodies the prom’s color scheme of green and yellow. The theme was inspired by the iconic wedding scene in “The Princess and the Frog” which takes place in New Orleans, Louisiana. This Disney musical/romance film, along with the setting of a zoo, and a green-yellow color arrangement complements one another.
Prom contracts will be accessible until April 22 and only juniors and seniors will be able to purchase a ticket. Freshmen and sophomores cannot attend the event unless invited by upperclassmen. Keep an eye out for more information about the prom that will be posted on their Instagram (@mkhsprom2024).
