What is homecoming? Every year, students of Mark Keppel High School celebrate one night together that consists of hanging out with friends, dancing, and making memories. Friday, September 14, 2024 was the homecoming rally and football game for Mark Keppel High School. The rally consisted of many performances from our Dance Teams, Drill, Cheer, Color Guard, and Band. All the students that were participating did an amazing job. Later in the evening was the homecoming football game. Although our team didn’t win, they played as best as they could and showed Aztec pride throughout the game. The following day was our school’s iconic homecoming dance: A Night in San Fransokyo.Â
Many students enjoyed their time, but there were pros and cons to this year’s homecoming. As I interviewed students from freshmen to Seniors throughout the school, one common thing they claimed was off about this year’s homecoming, was the theme. Many were confused about where it was from and agreed that it was random. Besides that, there were the pros. Aaryn Angeles, a junior at MKHS, said “This year’s DJ was good, I enjoyed the music he played and I hope we get the same one again for future dances.” Freshman Ruby Ramirez, said “The tacos were good but the prices were pretty expensive for food and drinks.” The long uncontrollable lines for the photo booth also had people talking. Kailyn Li, junior, stated that it took about 45 minutes to wait in line for the photobooth, and although there were only 2, it still took up a lot of time for students who could’ve been dancing, getting food, etc.Â
Students claimed the food was good, as well as the music, the decorations were nice, and overall thought homecoming went well. Even though some things were expensive or took up time to participate in other activities, everyone had an enjoyable time. Students were dancing, jumping, and laughing. It was a gym room filled with joy amongst our peers and even though homecoming wasn’t as some students expected, it was an amazing shared experience that only comes once a year.
