More than 25 years after the original movie we have a brand new movie. A continuation of the original, with the same cast and even some new characters. Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara are just some of the original cast that are included in this continuation. Some of the new characters include Astrid Deetz, played by Jenna Ortega, and Willem Dafoe as Wolf Jackson. Since it’s a continuation of the first movie, the storyline is just being continued as it left off but instead it’s a new generation. It tells the story of Lydia’s, the main character from the first movie, daughter. It also goes into depth about where the original characters are now. Whether that be Lydia’s parents or even what Lydia herself is doing now.
Looking at the box office, this movie has soared and is now the sixth highest-grossing domestic film of the year. So far the movie has made $226.8 million in North America and $329.7 million globally. Not to mention it is expected to just keep going up. Even with all the money it is making, what are peoples opinions? Is it as loved as it seems? According to Rotten Tomatoes, an app that many people review movies on, the new Beetlejuice movie has a 77% on the tomatometer while the old one has 83%. The tomatometer represents the percentage of good reviews a movie receives from critics. This means that less people must’ve liked the second movie compared to the first.
There have been many mixed opinions on this new movie. Whether people say it was good, bad, they are interested in watching it, or they have zero interest in seeing it. Nevaeh Saldivar, a senior at Mark Keppel, has seen the movie and also enjoyed it. She also told us that she has watched the second one as well but not until after she watched the first one. She states that she “wanted to see where the story began after seeing how strange the second one was.” Nevaeh liked both of the movies for different reasons but says that they had very similar humor in both.
Others, however, have not seen the new movie. Elcee Ayala, a junior at Mark Keppel, enjoyed the first but has no desire to watch the second. She explained to us how “sequels usually suck” and she doesn’t want to ruin the image she has of the first movie. Another junior at Mark Keppel, Riley Modesto, cannot wait to watch the new Beetlejuice movie. She had watched the previous one before and enjoyed it. She liked the story and she especially liked the father in the movie. When asking her why she wanted to watch the new movie, she had said she “wants to see how they add onto the original” and that Jenna Ortega is one of her favorite actresses. “Having her in the movie made it more appealing to me,” she said.
If you watched the first Beetlejuice movie and enjoyed it, we recommend grabbing some popcorn, and going to the theater while it is still out to watch the second one. Whether you enjoy it or think it’s super weird, it’s still a good watch.
