On October 5, 2024, our Mark Keppel marching band performed their 5 minute show entitled “When In Dreams” at their first competition held at Downey High School. Due to all their hard work and lengthy rehearsals, which are usually 2-4 times a week, they were able to get really good scores and feedback from judges for their first competition of the season.
Many of their scores are really high in the visual performance categories, getting first place all around. Overall, it was a really successful first competition of the season for our marching band with percussion placing second and color guard placing first in their 2A division.
In an amusing interview with Head Drum Major, Anthony Ramos, a senior who’s been in the marching band for 4 years now, thought the competition was a lot of fun. He said, “It was really motivating to see Mr. Ines come to see our show and to support our school’s marching band as we never had any admin from school come see our show. I think we did well, this is the best show I’ve seen us make in the past four years and getting to lead the band into this season is such an honor for me. The progress we had made since the summer is astounding, and I’m super proud of the show we’ve made. I enjoy competing, I love the adrenaline I feel in between shows. It also motivated all of us to continue to work hard and beat other schools that have good shows as well.”
Senior and Color Guard Captain, Lillian Ni, a 3 year member, shared, “The competition was really fun and exciting and I think everyone did awesome for our first competition. The amount of time and effort that we put into our field really shows and it’s really inspiring to me. I feel like this season is going to be amazing, but I did think the scores were unexpected because we lost 1st overall in our division by 0.2 points. It’s okay though, because at the start of the season scores don’t matter that much; what really matters is the feedback we get from the judges. But regardless, it felt really good and rewarding to be out there performing with everyone and seeing all the other bands.”
Good luck to our Aztec band and color guard for their amazing performances and all the effort and dedication they put into their sport. When In Dreams don’t miss these performances from our Aztec band and color guard.
