Making a long awaited return, Yuta from the boy group, NCT, officially released his first solo album, “Depth” on Oct 3. The album is a mix between Japanese and English with a theme of rock in all the songs. Yuta composed this entire album from the lyrics to the titles along with designing his solo debut’s showcase merch. Yuta’s fans (Yutamis) are selling out the dates of Oct 5 and Oct 27 as well as the merch to show support for his first solo debut.
The first track that this album starts with is “LAST SONG”, a very soft and melancholy piece. Towards the middle of this song, it slightly changes its tempo and adds in fain elements of rock while staying in soft elements for most of the song.
The title track of this album “Off The Mask” is the second track. This song is very metal rock and can also be considered J-rock. The contrast between these two tracks can show off Yuta’s duality.
“Save you” is the third track and the song has a strong rock vibe throughout the song. The electric guitar in this song is prominent and it is what gives the song the rock vibe.
“BAD EUPHORIA” is a catchy song on this album. It is also a metal rock song with it being the fourth track. This piece makes it enjoyable for listeners, especially with the way the drums are played.
The fifth track, “Prisoner,” reminds the listeners of rock music back then. For this reason, this song is considered the fan favorite with the nostalgic feeling that follows.. Fans like how Yuta is including classic rock in his songs since many bands discontinued rock..
“Goodbye” is the sixth track, starring Yuta’s vocals with subtle rock playing in the background. Although the song portrays gloominess, it is still a catch song to listeners.
The last track of the album “Butterfly (Depth Ver.) starts with hardly any rock elements and gradually adds in more rock elements and vocals.
“ I actually liked the album,” a senior at Mark Keppel, Critsina Ugaz, talking about her thoughts on the album. “It’s like rock metal and I love that genre of music. Also when I first listened to “Off The Mask,” I was in shock. I like that song.”
“ I thought the album was really good,” Emily You, a junior at Mark Keppel, talks about her thoughts on the album. “I like the concept of it and it really matched the whole album. It was unexpected to be hit with his rock songs since the first song on the album sounded more calm.”
Transitioning into a new type of concept was risky supposing that fans might dislike the album; nevertheless, Yuta still took over the hearts of fans through this album. Currently, the albums are only digital; however, physical ones will be released Nov 13 along with many unique versions. If rock is the type of music one enjoys, checking out this album is highly recommended.
