Halloween and Day of the Dead are both very significant holidays to many people. In order to make it special for people that wanted to celebrate, the Dream Center, a place made to give students an open space, decided to host some Day of the Dead activities for students to take part in, in order to include a variety of people and their traditions. From Oct. 30 to Nov. 6, the Dream Center held these activities during both lunch and powertime. Some of the activities were coloring skulls, making paper marigolds, papel picados, bracelets, or even just to watch the movie Coco that was playing in honor of Day of the Dead.
Jocelyn Hernandez, a senior who is the vice president of the dream club, says “there were more people than we expected there to be.” She says that she enjoyed being able to participate in the activities and help others learn how to do them. She also talks about how she has ideas for upcoming events that are winter themed, saying, “I think winter themed events like maybe a mini gingerbread contest or decorating winter cards.” These are just plans for this semester as there will be more to come next year.
Tiffany To, also a senior who is the secretary of the Dream Club, says that the turnout was what she was expecting. She said, “There were lots of people who participated in each activity.” She too enjoyed being able to participate in the activities telling us, “I found them crafty and creative.” She also says that she wants to plan to have more activities that have people interacting with each other since the ones for this event were more independent and didnt have people working together or talking to each other a lot.
The Dream Center holds different events throughout the whole year and even does special activities for different occasions. This event, for example, went through Halloween as well as Day of the Dead, covering not just one but 2 celebrations. The Dream Center will hold more events in the future for anyone interested.
