After a year of waiting, listeners are finally welcomed with their favorite music feature of the year: Spotify Wrapped. Spotify Wrapped was originally created as a marketing tool for users showing them their personalized recap of their music habits over the year. With its popularity since its release in 2016, it shaped the future of Spotify and the future of the music industry.
The release of Spotify Wrapped recalls a user’s listening experience including exploring songs and artists that helped define the year in music culture. This year, those songs were Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso,” Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things,” and Billie Eilish’s “Birds of a Feather.” Top streamed artists were Taylor Swift, for the second year in a row, followed by The Weeknd and Bad Bunny.
Spotify Wrapped includes total minutes listened, top percent of listeners, number of songs played, top five songs, personal music genres, number of artists played, top five artists streamed, a video of top streamed artists, and a listening streak from the past 12 months.
“Yes, because I love the artists I listen to,” Leanna Tan, a junior at Mark Keppel, stated when asked if she was happy with her Spotify Wrapped. “My top artist was Sabrina Carpenter and I was in the top 2% of her fans. My top song was ‘Piece by Piece ‘by Pharrel Williams. I listened to it 41 times and I’m in the top 0.05% of listeners.” When also asked if she expected what was on her Spotify Wrapped, she said, “I expected it because I listen to all the artists, but I think it only recorded half of the year because I feel like a lot of what I listened to was missing.”
Athena Woo, a junior on the Mark Keppel Dance Team stated, “I expected my Spotify Wrapped and I am happy with it because I thought it was very accurate. My top artist for this year is Tate Mcrae and my top song is ‘Nobody Gets Me’ by SZA. I have played it a total of 70 times.” Her total number of minutes listened to on Spotify was 29,537 for the year.
Happy listening!
