To kick off awards show season, the 82nd annual Golden Globes premiered on January 5, 2025. The Golden Globe awards are given to international actors and actresses to honor the work that they do. It is an annual ceremony that has been going on since 1944. To start off the night, the host, Nikki Glaser, dropped hilarious jokes creating the first viral memes of 2025. From calling the Golden Globes Ozempic’s biggest night to calling out the cast of Challengers, her jokes were either a hit or miss with the audience.
The most highly anticipated awards of the night with their winners were:
- Best Motion Picture (Drama) – The Brutalist
- Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) – Emilia Perez
- Best Motion Picture (Animated) – Flow
- Best Motion Picture (Non-English Language) – Emilia Perez
- Cinematic and Box Office Achievement – Wicked
- Best TV Series (Drama) – Shogun
- Best TV Series (Music or Comedy) – Hacks
- Best TV Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for TV – Baby Reindeer
These nominees and winners came dressed to impress, with show stopping looks off and on the carpet. Zendaya, an actress who has played in many movies and TV shows like MJ in Spider-man and Chani in Dune, wore a beautiful elegant corset gown inspired by the late American singer and activist, Joyce Bryant. While the gown was jaw dropping, people’s eyes went straight to the ring that she was seen wearing on her finger. People started to speculate that her long term boyfriend, Tom Holland, an actor who has also played as Spider-man in the Spider-man movies alongside her, had finally proposed to her after being together for more than four years.
Kayli Loi, a sophomore at Mark Keppel High School, said “I did not hear much about the Golden Globes; I [only heard] about the big moments like Zendaya and Tom Holland maybe being engaged and how Kylie Jenner was there with Timothee Chalamet. I think they are a cute couple; random but cute.”
Lauren Young, a senior at Mark Keppel High School, said “I only watched the Golden Globes to see Timothee Chalamet, [and] I was so sad when he did not win anything. I did not know many movies this year. There were a lot of celebrities I didn’t really care for but it was fun to watch for Timothee.”
Many did not enjoy the awards ceremony at the Golden Globes this year since many of the movies are niche. The Golden Globes was a great way to start off the award show season, creating iconic moments that will be looked back on.
