Vampires never die. One of the most iconic vampires in cinema history, “Nosferatu,” is back over a century later.
“Nosferatu”, directed by Robert Eggers, is a long-awaited remake of the original silent film “Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror.” The film debuted on Dec. 25, 2024. Set in a Victorian era in the fictional town of Wisborg, Germany, Eggers tells the story of newlyweds Ellen and Thomas Hutter. Nicholas Hoult, who plays the role of Thomas Hutter, sets off on a journey to Count Orlok’s estate, leaving behind his wife, Ellen, who Lily Rose-Depp plays. Ellen then quickly discovers that Court Orlok himself has haunted her.
Bill Skarsgård, who is more famously known for his role as Pennywise in the movie “IT,” starred as Count Orlok. Other characters in the movie include Friedrich Harding, who Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays, Anna Harding, which Emma Corin plays, and Professor Albiin Eberhert Von Franze, which is Willem Dafoe’s role.
Eggers makes the environment and atmosphere of “Nosferatu” very horrifying, building suspense and unease in viewers in many ways with its unsettling visuals, exploration of obsession, and human fear. The sound to cinematography emphasize the horror that comes from Count Orlok’s presence.
“Overall I’d rate this movie a solid nine out of ten,” Kelly Chen Huang, a junior on the MKHS Color Guard team, mentioned. “ I thought it was a pretty good movie and so did my friends when I went to watch it with my friend group. I did think that it was pretty scary and it wasn’t the type of scary that I was expecting. But I would recommend this movie to other people, it was pretty good!”
“The movie was pretty good, I’d give it an eight out of ten,” Beverly Alexandra, a junior attending MKHS, expressed. For how scary the movie is I would say it was about seven out of ten. It was a pretty solid horror movie but for me, it wasn’t that scary compared to other horror movies like “The Conjuring of Annabelle.” Alexandra added, “I liked the overall theme of the movie and I’d say it was pretty interesting. I also liked how it reminded me of this one SpongeBob episode I watched a really long time ago that had a ‘Nosferatu’ reference.”
“Nosferatu” is bringing back that fresh and terrifying feel of horror movies as well as reviving the vampire genre with its blend of suspense and eerie atmosphere. This remake shows the long lasting legacy of vampires.
