However, the performance that had been the most shocking was a surprise performance by The Weeknd, who had been “boycotting” the Grammys after he called the Recording Academy “corrupt.” He performed two songs from his latest album ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow’ surrounded by dancers and unsettling visuals. Another significant part of The Weeknd’s performance was when he brought out Playboi Carti to perform “Timeless.”
In addition to these standout performances, the show featured its annual In Memoriam segment, celebrating the lives and legacies of those in music who have passed on. There was also a special performance for the late producer, Quincy Jones, that featured Cynthia Erivo and Stevie Wonder. A tribute to Liam Payne was also featured, as past footage of him in concert played on screen, showcasing him with a massive crowd of One Direction fans.
Maxine Martinez, a junior on Mark Keppel High School’s Color Guard team, stated, “Yes, I watched the Grammys, and [I rooted] for Doechii, Billie Eilish, and SZA to take home a Grammy.” When asked if she had any favorite moments from the show, she stated, “I loved watching The Weeknd’s comeback, and I always love when artists do any covers.”
The 67th Annual Grammy Awards undoubtedly showcased a powerful night for music, filled with surprises, emotional tributes, and groundbreaking wins. The Grammys will continue to be a show that reminds those of how music continues to connect those around the world.
