The nation’s biggest night of television, the Super Bowl, happened the first weekend of February. The Chiefs and Eagles, being the last two teams remaining from the NFL, played against each other on Sunday, February 9, at 3:30 p.m. The winners of the last Super Bowl, the Kansas City Chiefs, made an appearance for the second year in a row in an attempt to repeat last year’s win. The Super Bowl is a championship football game held on a Sunday at the beginning of February, this game being the fifty-ninth.
On February 9, the Philadelphia Eagles were able to defeat the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22. Stopping the Kansas City Chiefs from winning three consecutive times. The Super Bowl is much more than just a regular NFL game. Bets are placed, commercials are talked about, and the well-anticipated halftime show. The companies that apply to have their commercial played during the Super Bowl typically pay around $8 million just for 30 seconds of fame.
This year’s halftime show was performed by Kendrick Lamar. After the controversial Grammy performance by Lamar, he gained lots of popularity. He performed ten songs, including the two that he performed with SZA and Not Like Us, which was the most controversial part of his performance. “Not Like Us” is about rapper Drake and his controversies from the past year–putting him on blast to the whole nation.
Cayden Hashizume, a junior at Mark Keppel, says, “I enjoyed the halftime show a lot. Kendrick Lamar is one of my top artists and I really liked that he brought out SZA. I wish I could go see them on tour.”
“I enjoyed the game more than the halftime show. I was mainly watching for the competition between the two teams; the performance was more of just a bonus. I’m glad the Eagles won, I didn’t want the Chiefs to have their ‘3peat,’” stated James Osorio, a senior at Keppel.
Overall, the Super Bowl is an annual event that many tune in to and enjoy seeing. While the football game likely had the dad’s attention this past Sunday, their children likely only tuned in for the halftime performance.
