Chappel Roan has, yet again, faced an unavoidable wrath of backflash on her journey to fame. On her recent appearance on the Call her Daddy podcast, an interview-style podcast hosted by Alex Cooper, Roan made a few controversial comments that sparked intense conversations on platforms like TikTok and Instagram.
“All of my friends who have kids are in hell,” she claimed confidently. “I don’t know anyone who’s happy and has children at this age.”
Many expressed their disappointment in the singer for making such harsh and dramatic claims about motherhood. Angry mothers on social media voiced that their children are the lights of their lives that bring them joy on a daily basis. Brooke Crawford, a sophomore at Mark Keppel High School, expressed “I do not agree with Chappel Roan because it is unfair for her to speak on behalf of all mothers out there. Her statement is harmful because she fails to acknowledge the individuality of motherhood and generalizes their experience.”
For most moms, the experience of motherhood is a privilege, not a punishment. Those upset with Roan are now cancelling her for discouraging her fans from having children and painting motherhood as an awfully dreadful commitment. Isyss Pineda, a Junior at Mark Keppel High School, said “She should be cancelled because it’s not unreasonable for her fans to expect her to be politically informed as an advocate of many other issues.”
Some parents, however, express that Roan’s comments help them feel seen. Roan indirectly (and admittedly very aggressively) addressed the difficulties of motherhood that are often ignored or misrepresented in the media. Though the delivery of her comment was unnecessarily bitter, some believe that it was still a very important topic to address. These fans contend that the singer simply made an observation that begs an often ignored question – are there enough resources and support systems available for mothers?
This is not the first time the singer has been “cancelled” by her so-called fans. Just last year, she received backlash for publicly taking political stances on her TikTok account. Although she has barely risen to fame this past year, she has already been cancelled numerous times. Is Roan problematic, or are her fans simply over-fixated on her every move?
