Scream 6: Scarily Funny

Emily Wang

Numerous deaths, mysterious masks, unexpected people, what’s happening? Scream is a series of horror, thriller movies that involve brutal violence such as intense stabbing. It first came out in 1996, a time when people had no interest in horror shows, but Scream brought back the interest again. Each series involve a new Ghostface that targets a group of people. The Ghostface is a mysterious person dressed in black with a ghost mask who calls with a voice changer, sends texts and pretends to be a family/friend. Billy Loomis, the original killer, inspired other people to become killers which is revealed in each Scream movie. According to the previous movies, trusting the love interest is always a mistake.

In this new Scream, a group of teenagers is being targeted again after barely surviving the last killer in their old town. After killing the last two Ghostface in their old town, Tara Carpenter, Sam Carpenter, Chad Meeks-Martin, and Mindy Meeks-Martin decide to go live in New York City, hoping to heal their trauma from their old town. The four of them call themselves the “Core 4,” which means they will do anything to protect each other. Throughout the movie, it was revealed that they care for each other a lot. Tara and Sam are sisters and the children of Billy Loomis. According to the last Ghostface, that is the particular reason why they were attacked. Fortunately, they survived and killed the Ghostface along with his girlfriend.

After arriving in New York, the four of them meet new friends, Ethan, Quinn Bailey, and Anika. Anika, Sam, and Tara also turn out to be roommates. Besides Sam, they all go to college together and Mindy gets a girlfriend, Anika. Tara and Chad’s relationship slowly starts building up. When they thought they had finally escaped their nightmare, Ghostface comes back. Suspension builds up in the friend group because everyone thinks it’s among themselves, which turns out to be true. While they are having a gathering in their apartment, Ghostface makes his first move silently and goes to Quinn’s room, stabs her, and throws the body out of the room. Quinn, however, was not well-exposed in the film, making it possible to believe that her body was a fabrication. After some intense fighting, Mindy loses her girlfriend and the rest of the people are horribly injured. The only love interest in the group is now gone, and the suspension grows more, especially on Ethan, the only one who wasn’t there when Ghostface came.

What makes the Scream series stand out from other horror movies is the plot twists. In this movie, the plot twists are good; however, at the same time, easy to predict. One major plot twist that viewers did not expect was the Detective being a killer himself and leading two Ghostfaces who are his children. He is the same Detective that was helping Sam and Tara and his children are the sisters’ friends. Their goal was to take revenge for the killer from the last Scream movie, Richie, who turned out to be the Detective’s child as well. Like what many had expected, the sisters’ did their thing again and killed them. However, what made it different was that Tara put on the ghost outfit and killed one of them. Additionally, there’s a chance the sisters may become mentally inside after murdering someone in the same costume that other kills wore to kill. Doing something like this can easily mess with the mentality of the sisters and cause them to have a mindset of what they’re doing is right, eventually doing it to innocent people.

Overall, this movie and the series are highly recommended for people who enjoy horror with a hint of dumbness. This is the perfect horror movie with suspension and hilarity at the same time. From the actors to the plot to the emotions, everything is perfect. Their love and their will to protect against each other add to the plot perfectly, making the viewers feel the same type of emotion across the screen.
