Tornadoes Hit Carson and Compton

Allie Kim

Two tornadoes hit the Carson/ Compton area on Thursday morning, May 4, 2023. They were both rated to be EF0 tornadoes, which are the least destructive on the scale. Although they are classified as the “weakest”, the tornadoes that wreaked havoc in the Compton/Carson area reached up to 75 mph.

The first tornado arrived around 8:45 am at 75 mph, leaving a short path of destruction behind it. In the brief time it had, the tornado uprooted trees, cars, and a building.  The second tornado occurred around 10 minutes after the first, around 3 miles to the east. It downed a powerline, wrecked a nursery, and left damage to a house.

On average, California sees about 9 tornadoes a year. These two tornadoes have brought this year’s count to nine. As these tornadoes that we hear about get closer to home, we can only hope that these were the last tornadoes for California in 2023.
