Girls Varsity Volleyball’s First Home Game- A Success

Matthew Suh, Staff Writer

Girls volleyball is off to a good start with their first home game on the 20th of August against Rosemead High school where they won 3 sets out of the 4 that they played. After their devastating loss at their first away game against San Gabriel, the girls were ecstatic with this win.

The girls volleyball team has been out for nearly two years now due to covid restrictions, and according to Ms. Duong, the activities director, the girls seem very motivated, but they need to start working on communication, especially once the ball is in their court. Being out of practice for two years is tough, but adding restrictions to their playing makes it even harder. In regards to the mask restriction, Ms. Duong adds her thoughts, saying, “Obviously, I’m not super stoked about it. As an athlete myself, I know how hard it is to run and play with a mask on. This isn’t ideal, but we have to listen to the state.” The new ordinance is for all players, coaches, and attendees to wear masks while viewing, or playing in an indoor sporting event. These guidelines went into effect on August 22nd, and they have sparked controversy, as to the safety of the players, as masks restrict their ability to breathe while running.

In an interview with the girls Varsity Volleyball coach, Mr. Chu, we asked for his thoughts of the first game and who he thought was the ‘shining star’ of the team. He said that at the moment, he doesn’t think any one particular person stands out as it is too early to call a player a MVP.

On the court, both teams exchanged bumping the ball in the air. With Keppel going on a 20 scorestreak. The game ended with Keppel ahead by 15 points, and their first home game ended with a success.
