International Women’s day was on Sunday, Mar. 8. It celebrates the women in our lives and the pioneers that came before us. People look back at the history of women’s suffrage, birth control, and rights for higher education. Because of these pioneers, women have access to more opportunities in today’s society.
“Women are pretty cool and awesome,” Rachael Lui, a senior Keppel, said. “All the really cool people you know in the world are women. Celebrate women’s day. Tell your closest woman that they’re pretty radtastic.”
“I love both my mom and sister dearly. Throughout my life they have helped me with my struggles and a dark time in my life,” explained Andru Martinez, a senior at Keppel. “I’ve seen how they struggle with discrimination, and yet they still find ways to smile and laugh. They are my role models in finding a way to truly brighten the days of others and be the light that shines for others.”
Overall, women’s day celebrates the progress that feminists have made. It also reminds us to continue to fight for the rights of all women. Women’s day reminds us that the women before us fought for the things that are deemed normal today for women to do, like owning a credit card. Women’s day is the day where we acknowledge what role women play in today’s world.
