New Library Furniture

New+Library+Furniture

On October 3, Mark Keppel’s library gained some new and improved furniture. According to Cindy Vernon, Mark Keppel’s school library, this is a replication of her brain. Everything is how she imagined and she refers to it as her second home.

Vernon said that the expectation she had for the furniture was that it would be a welcoming, comfortable space. She also wanted it to be more modern since the previous furniture seemed old-fashioned and dark.“I wanted it to be something that really brightened up the space, and I think it more than meets my expectations. I think it’s bright, happy, comfortable. All of those things.”

“I want the furniture to be used for all the different ways that libraries are used,” she replied when asked how she wanted students to make use of the new furniture.”For reading, and for study, but also as a place to be comfortable and to hang out. [As] a place where they can just have a quiet [space] that’s safe.

“Those spaces are used all different ways …During lunch or before school, [there] are some kids doing homework, reading, on their phones, [or] some just sitting with their friends.”

Vernon absolutely agrees that the new furniture makes the atmosphere a great deal better. “The furniture we had before was just dark, uncomfortable, and old,” she says. “It was 85 years old. We have never had an [upgrade] that whole time. I think that when people see it, they want to sit. It looks comfortable, it looks inviting; we have all different kinds of spaces. [There’s] couches, we have a quiet study place, a seating area, a place where they can study.

“What we had before was just so old, you couldn’t really do anything with it. It was big and clunky,” Ms. Vernon says. She has been working here for 24 years, so she has been with this furniture for a long time, she was very excited about this new change in the place she’s been for a while. “There’s something to be said about things looking nice. Aesthetics, like being beautiful and welcoming. Having bright colors just makes things more enjoyable. Getting the new furniture is great for everyone, and me too!”

Vernon is very excited for students to come to check out the new library furniture, so please, do stop by when you get the chance.

Audrey Segura
Audrey Segura, Arts & Entertainment Co-Editor
Audrey Segura is a junior at Mark Keppel, who edits the Arts & Entertainment section of the paper (and also runs the Instagram!) She loves listening to music and watching Instagram reels in her free time, just as much as she loves spontaneously picking up her friends to get acai bowls or smoothies. Audrey would like to say she is trilingual and can speak English, Spanish, and Mandarin, but only as a joke since she knows only a few vocab words in Mandarin. She is also interested in fashion, producing/songwriting, and her family. If you see her in the hallways, don't be afraid to wave or say hi! ᯓ★
Emily Wang, Arts & Entertainment Co-Editor
Emily is a junior who's obsessed with anything matcha-flavored. In her free time, she enjoys watching romantic dramas and horror movies (even though she gets scared really easily). If you do talk to her, here is a warning: she is most likely going to say, "what?" after every sentence because she is unable to hear properly. Emily enjoys eating spicy food (especially the tomato pasta buldak), but she can't handle spice at all. She is also a HUGE hotpot lover and loves torturing herself with the extra hot soup base, which again, she cannot handle.
