Oscars Nominations Revealed

The Oscar’s 96th annual nominations were announced with some movies sweeping the categories and others being snubbed. The 24 categories include Best Picture, Best Score, and Best Cinematography; furthermore, leading actresses and actors are used for categorizing several movies, documentaries, and short films to recognize the work from actors and actresses. The movies and actors are then voted for by the Academy of Motion Picture Art and Sciences, while the movie with the most votes in the category wins

This year’s Oscar nominations have been dominated by “Oppenheimer,” with the movie receiving 13 nominations out of 24. “Oppenheimer” received nominations for Cillian Murphy being Best Actor in a leading role, Christopher Nolan as Best Director for his work in “Oppenheimer” and being nominated for Best Picture of the Year. Following behind “Oppenheimer” in terms of category nominations is “Poor Things,” being nominated for 11 nominations competing with “Oppenheimer” for Directing, Original Score, and Best Picture.

Lily Gladstone was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role, and Gladstone is the first native American actress, to be nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role within the Oscar’s long 96 year history. Gladstone was nominated for her portrayal of Mollie Burkhart in “Killers of the Flower Moon.” alongside Robert De Niro was nominated for Supporting Actor for his performance of William Hale

Award shows such as the Oscars or Academy Awards have several responses revolving around some actors, actresses, and movies not being nominated. A popular example is “Barbie,” where some feel as if the lead actress, Margot Robbie, should’ve been nominated for Leading Actress or that Greta Gerwig should have been nominated for director. Leonardo DiCaprio was also not given a nomination for his performance of Ernest Burkhart in “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

“I think that the Oscars are sometimes rigged and sometimes it’s fair,” Sunny Lien, a student at Mark Keppel responds to being asked about the Oscars. “Honestly though overall, it gives credit to the people who deserve it.”
