Daniel Caesar is once again entering a new era, one that feels both intimate and expansive. Caesar, a grammy-winning R&B artist recently released his fourth album, “Son of Spergy” on October 24 following “Never Enough,” shaping up to be his most personal and spiritually enlightening album.
“Spergy” is a nickname for Caesar’s father. Norwill Simmonds, a gospel singer and an early role model in Caesar’s life. “Son of Spergy” symbolizes exploration of masculinity, faith, family, and generational lineage, characteristics that long lingered in his music before this new release. In fact, the album opens with a glorious gospel choir with incredible falsetto.
Ariel Reyes-Sanchez, a junior at Mark Keppel and an avid listener of Daniel Caesar, said, “A masterpiece, it truly touches the soul.”
In 2017, when Caesar first emerged with the hit album “Freudian,” it introduced the world to his falsetto and emotional words. This album showed new levels of intimacy, raw, and grounded in the R&B world of traditional heartbreak. Two years later with “Case Study 01″ showed his electronic side and philosophical uses of his music, while “Never Enough” showed his ambient side.
“Son of Spergy,” is an evolution of emotional honesty and curiosity. It features artists like Bon Iver, Sampha, and Blood orange. If “Fruidan” was about love, then Son of Spergy is about legacy and homecoming. “Have a baby (With Me)” displays his desire for intimacy for creation, rather than lust.
Annie Huang, a senior at Mark Keppel, said, “Listening to this album is like floating to the scent of warm pie. It feels good, and makes you float because of it.”
Whether he is returning to his gospel roots or moving forward with musical experimentation, Caesar is showing his incredible talent by bridging the gap between all of his worlds across all of his albums.
