SNAP wins Get Lit Classic Slam 2023

Maryam Barro Tall, Staff Writer

Mark Keppel High School’s slam poetry team SNAP, Speak Now All Poets, went to competition in April, on the 20th for Semi and Quarter Finals, and that Saturday, the 22nd, when they made it to Finals and came home not only the winners of the slam, but the second team in the competition’s history to win back to back. The team’s coach is Dorothy Burkhart, and the 2022-2023 team consists of Alexa Armendariz, a senior whose last year it was on the team, Gabby Wong and Tiffany To, sophomores, and Zenina Adao, Samantha Rios, Megan Garibay, and the Aztec’s own Maryam Tall, all four of which are juniors. This team has been working for months to come to this slam and speak their truth, and they did extremely well. If anyone wants to join SNAP, there are auditions every year, and even previous team members have to try out. No spot is guaranteed. Poets must choose a poem from Get Lit’s Poem Anthology and write a response poem to it, whether you prepare by yourself, or prepare when performing poetry in Burkhart’s class where she does poetry the first semester. Congratulations to this team and enjoy these wonderful photos taken from the Semifinals and the Finals!
